Yoga for Stress Management

Stress is a part of life - one we wish to avoid, but will probably never succeed in ridding ourselves of. There are ways of focusing your mind, concentrating and relaxing. Yoga is an excellent way to reduce stress in your life. Here are a few small tricks that can be used when you cannot commit to a full yoga session.

Corpse Pose (Savasana)

Don't let the name fool you, this pose, while simplistic in nature, is an amazing way of calming your mind and is a great way of starting off your day!

  1. Lay on your back. Make sure you are on a firm surface and use a yoga mat if that is what makes you feel most comfortable.

  2. Place your hands palm up, and your arms about 10 inches from your body. It is ok to let your fingers curl

  3. Make sure your body is in alignment. Your head should be in line with your spine, not bent to the side.

  4. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Your breathing should be 'equal' in terms of inhaling and exhaling. Your mind will wander, that's ok, just focus on your breathing.

  5. Stay in position for a minimum of 10 minutes. When you come out of the position, slowly roll on your side, and slowly stand up.
Don't have the time for the corpse pose? Or maybe you're in a situation where you can't go lie down for a length of time. In either case, try the following:

Sitting Meditation

  1. Sit in a comfortable chair, with your feet on the floor.

  2. Place your hands on your thighs and close your eyes

  3. Focus on your breathing as you inhale and exhale. Again, your mind will probably wander, and that's ok, just try and focus on your breathing
  4. Try to stay in this pose for 10 minutes. When complete, slowly open your eyes.
